You can do whatever you want

A friend asked me last week if his idea for a reel was too silly.

The plan: recreate the Nickelback "Photograph" video, shot for shot, to promote his business making AI images.

I told him it was goofy. I also told him it was great. Both are true, and only one of them matters.

So I gave him the advice I give everybody. You can do whatever you want, so long as you can face the consequences. He can face this one. Worst case it flops and he made something funny. Best case people remember him. Go make the reel.

People ask me about my workouts all the time.

Mostly because I'm always posting them on Instagram, specifically so people will ask me about my workouts. The system works.

They want the split. The macros. The program they can copy.

But my routine isn't that interesting. It's a bunch of crazy stuff with kettlebells and basic lifts everybody's already heard of. Nothing you haven't seen.

It was never the routine. It's that I know what every choice costs, and I decide whether I want to pay it. That's the whole answer.

I paid the comfort tax for years without knowing it.

Every morning: the gym, the assault bike, grind hard, make a reel about it.

Every night: a bowl of ice cream to wind down.

Felt earned. I'd trained hard. Felt harmless.

My body fat sat around 18%. Then I cut the nightly ice cream and it dropped below 10%. Same training, same everything else. One variable.

So the ice cream was the difference the whole time. I just never did the math.

Here's what it actually cost me.

Not a six pack. That's the part people ask about and it's the least interesting part.

One picture. Me at the splash pad with my kids, shirt off, nothing to think about.

Something they can look at in twenty years and go: my dad was jacked in his late forties. No reason I can't do the same.

That's what the ice cream was buying. Not abs. A photograph.

Every comfortable choice comes with a bill.

It doesn't arrive today. It arrives in ten years, with interest. Most people pay it blind. They never see the receipt until they're standing in a life they don't remember agreeing to.

And it's not just your body. The tax hits in four places.

Physical, like the body fat. Professional, because now I have proof I live what I teach. Personal, because I feel different in my own skin. And posterity, because my kids are watching, and that's the part they keep.

So how do you actually decide?

The thing you're stuck on isn't mysterious. It's hard. The only question is which kind.

Hard because it's challenging? That's growth. Pay it. It costs you something and hands you more back.

Hard because it's not what you want to be doing? That's a different bill entirely. That might be time to quit.

Most people can't tell those apart, so they quit the first one and keep paying the second one for years.

Skip the workout. Stay at the job. Order the wings, watch the game, let it slide another week. You're a grown adult and this is your one life.

Just sign the receipt.

One note on that professional corner.

The reason I can train every morning is that my work pays me for what I know, not for hours in a chair. Focused calls, booked by people who already know me. That's what protects the mornings.

I use EveryExpert for it. Here's the honest pitch.

You pick one thing you're good at and name what people get. You set your price. You get a link. That's the whole setup, and it takes about ten minutes.

After that, the boring parts stop being your problem. Scheduling, payment, the calendar. You don't invoice anybody. You don't chase anybody. Somebody clicks, pays, and shows up, and you just do the thing you're already good at.

And it stacks. Every call you run leaves a review sitting on your profile, so the next person has a reason to book before you've said a word.

No website, no funnel, no launch. One link you can drop wherever people already find you.

Oh, and my friend is making the reel. There's a wind machine involved. I've never once heard somebody regret the ridiculous thing they made. Only the one they talked themselves out of. It's either going to be a good time or a good story, hopefully both.

Keep building,
Terry
